Debbie Clelland, PhD
Counselling & Consulting
Clinical Consulting
Debbie has worked in the field of counselling since 1998, teaching undergraduate and graduate counselling students since 2006, and spent a great deal of time learning about and discussing evidence-based, ethical and inclusive counselling.
The theories she works from include Satir’s Transformational Systemic Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, the Gottman Model, and relationship-focused CBT. The focus of her instruction for counselling courses includes clinical skills, professional and research ethics, relationship counselling, and career counselling.
Debbie has a very practical-focused consultation style, wanting to support professionals in their own critical thinking and decision making. She has advised many counsellors-in-training and practicing counsellors on topics such as:
-
ongoing balancing of self-care to provide competent care for clients
-
avoiding compassion fatigue and counsellor impairment
-
setting up plans for professional development
-
developing counselling specializations such as career counselling
Clinical consultation is not the same as clinical supervision. Please see the Frequently Asked Questions page for more information on the differences.
